President Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo has granted amnesty to 808 prisoners.
A statement from the Ghana Prisons Service said the President did this upon consultation with the Council of State and recommendation from the Ghana National Prisons Service.
The breakdown from the statement released by the Ghana Prisons Service said:
First Time Offenders – 783
Seriously Ill – 11
Inmates on death roll to be commuted to life imprisonment – 7
Inmates serving life sentence to have sentence commuted to 20 years definite term – 4
Very old prisoners (70 and above).
It is, however, unclear whether this measure taken by the president is in line with efforts to contain the deadly Coronavirus.
